Holy sheet, this live record is made of so much amaze. This is maybe the first time I’ve listened to Yeasayer since the end of July when I saw them at the Metro, and it was fucking freezing and the rain was practically torrential and I was still sleepy and grouchy from hopping off a delayed flight from Melbourne mere hours prior, but I went anyway and emerged two hours afterward absolutely convinced that Odd Blood was my record of the year, even though I’d spent the week after I first heard it last December cooking up a conspiracy theory that it was all an elaborate joke conceived by the band in protest of album leaks. That would be what is called having a seriously awesome live show, folks.
… Their screams stuck in the wall
Their heads fell apart into sleep like the two halves
Of a lopped melon, but love is hard to stop
In their entwined sleep they exchanged arms and legs
In their dreams their brains took each other hostage
In the morning they wore each other’s face
— the very end of “Lovesong”, by Ted Hughes.
I prefer his wife by miles, but the culmination of this poem is really something rather wonderful.
